# Neurocritical care: study objectives

> **Educational work by a pre-medical student — not medical advice.** Not a clinical protocol, prescription, or patient handout, and not for patient care. See [DISCLAIMER](../DISCLAIMER.md).

Independent premedical study objectives, revised 27 October 2026. The earlier execute-a-protocol and medication-dose objectives are withdrawn.

## Concepts to explain

- Explain the simplified relationship CPP ≈ MAP − ICP with units and measurement assumptions.
- Describe why hypotension, hypoxemia, carbon dioxide changes, temperature and sedation may affect neurologic interpretation.
- Separate traumatic brain injury, aneurysmal SAH, hemorrhage, ischemia and postoperative neurologic dysfunction.
- Recognize that injury-specific guideline populations and targets are not interchangeable.
- Explain why neuromuscular blockade prevents motor observation and supplies neither analgesia nor amnesia.

## Appraisal tasks

Compare the severe-TBI guideline with the aneurysmal-SAH guideline in the [source guide](../references/bibliography.md). Identify the relevant population, recommendation strength and missing information in a vignette. Distinguish temporizing rescue from routine prophylaxis. Do not infer a fixed sodium, blood-pressure or carbon-dioxide target for every case.

## Synthetic discussion

For a deterioration vignette, identify plausible mechanisms and the information a qualified team would need urgently. Describe uncertainty in prognosis, including confounding from sedatives, metabolic disturbance and timing. No emergency treatment algorithm, osmotherapy dose, operative recommendation or independent examination competency is supplied.
